Big news for those following the cruise industry: Norwegian Prima was christened late last month to much fanfare and set off for its inaugural trip departing from Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. The ship is the newest from Norwegian Cruise Line and is the first in its Prima Class, the next generation of NCL ships. Read on for more details about the christening ceremony and find out why this vessel is the talk of the cruise industry.
About Norwegian Prima
With a guest capacity of 3,100, this spacious new ship is one of the largest vessels out there—in fact, it boasts the most outdoor deck space of any new cruise ship. Among its many bells and whistles are the fastest slides at sea, the three-level Prima race track, a tidal wave waterslide, infinity pools, and the Galaxy Pavilion, the first flying simulator at sea. Dining, too, has gotten a makeover, with concepts including the buzzed-about Indulge Food Hall, with its huge outdoor patio and mouthwatering collection of eateries and cuisines to choose from.
Christening in Iceland
If Reykjavik seems like an off-the-beaten-path place for a cruise christening, that’s because Norwegian Prima is actually the first mainstream cruise ship to be christened in Iceland’s capital city. The August 27, 2022 event celebrated the ship’s inaugural trip, a sailing to Amsterdam with stops in Cork, Ireland; Portland, England; and Le Havre, France. Around 2,500 people were onboard for the vessel’s debut sailing.
Katy Perry, Norwegian Prima Godmother
Every new cruise ship needs a godmother to give her blessing before it embarks on its first journey. In this case, the godmother was none other than illustrious pop star Katy Perry, who lent her considerable talent to the christening event. While on stage in the Theater, she was given the honor of pressing the button that released a bottle of champagne, which smashed against Norwegian Prima’s hull, in keeping with a longstanding maritime tradition. Afterward, during a high-energy performance, she belted out a few of her smash hits, including Firework, Teenage Dream, Roar, and California Girls.
But Perry didn’t simply christen the ship—she was actually one of the vessel’s first guests. Along with husband Orlando Bloom, Perry celebrated her daughter Daisy’s second birthday on Norwegian Prima the night before.
Setting New Standards for Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Prima’s christening was much more than a celebration of its inaugural trip. The event marked the reemergence of the cruise industry from a long and grueling pandemic, whose many twists and turns were difficult for cruisers and the industry. Without a doubt, Norwegian Prima’s debut is a big deal for Norwegian Cruise Line. The ship is the first of six new vessels in the Prima Class, with the Norwegian Viva due to debut in August 2023. Expect some of the most luxurious accommodations at sea, including a redefined version of The Haven, Norwegian’s cluster of well-appointed, spacious staterooms.
